The course aims to introduce students to a vital period in Georgian history that had been seriously neglected by Georgian and Western historians. It covers the period from the 1890s to 1921, including the Soviet Russian occupation of Georgia. Students will learn about the development of industrialism, urbanization and the formation of Georgian nationalism; the stages of the emergence of Georgian political forces, revolutionary movements, as well as the establishment and development of the Georgian Democratic Republic. Students will be required to work with primary sources.
