The Caucasus from the 19th to the 21st Century: History of Occupation, Conflicts and the Development of Society

The course aims to introduce students to the political subjects and peoples of the Caucasus, and modern history. It seeks to help students develop analytical and research skills by requiring them to work with West European, Russian and Georgian primary sources; familiarize them with best European scholarship available regarding the issue; examine the relationship between Caucasian political forces and peoples, history of conflicts, their roots and causes; explore the evolution of the Caucasian peoples from the late Feudal period to the 21st century. 

Students will be familiarized with contradictory nationalistic historiographic narratives created by regional nations and the impact of such narratives on politics. Caucasian history will be viewed against transnational processes taking place in global history.
