The course aims to acquaint students with chief events, persons and institutions from the history of Imperial Russia between 1689 and 1917. Particular emphasis will be placed on the political, social, economic and cultural changes that occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as on the leading figures in Russia at the time. Based on the most recent scholarship, students will analyze the logic of evolution of the Russian Empire from a medieval post-Mongol kingdom to an empire of western type, and ultimately to an anti-western red empire.
