The course aims to enhance students’ understanding of Russia as a powerful geopolitical player and a country with complex history. It examines chief socio-political characteristics of modern Russia and the logic behind its aggressive attitude to Georgia. Students will acquire knowledge of modern Russia, which is essential for the understanding of Georgian history. The study of Russian history is important for interpreting Georgian history, just as Georgian history is essential for the study of the Middle Ages. Therefore, students will be asked to treat the modern history of Russia without bias, in the light of international scholarship and by applying respective theoretical frameworks.
